Valérie came back from a trip to Sri Lanka with an image of a landscape reflected in a lake in her head. When working with Kenza, they used it as the starting point from which they eventually came up with a more mountainous scene, the perfect design. Thanks to the innovative work of the weavers on texture and volumes, the finished tapestry has a true feeling of depth.
The magical reflection comes from the slightly curved shape of the aluminium polished mirror structure. This simple, clean, hand-shaped dome in sheet aluminium is the result of a process that is just as precise and complex as tapestry making.
« The main challenge with this project was to transcribe visual impressions that were, for the most part, borrowed from nature, into an interpretation through textiles of moss, lichens, mineral rocks… etc.
The sensory abstractions were answered by associating the Aubusson flat stitch with different techniques of knotted stitch that are often used to make Savonnerie knotted-pile carpets. This enabled us to highlight an age-old skill that is even more rare than the Aubusson flat-stitch and to revive it by putting in an entirely new context.»
